Algernon Blackwood.

Algernon Henry Blackwood (14 March 1869 – 10 December 1951) was an English broadcasting narrator, journalist, novelist and short-story writer.

His two best-known stories are probably “The Willows” and “The Wendigo” though he wrote many more short stories, novels, plays and non-fiction works.

Ambrose Bierce.

Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce (24 June 1842 – circa 1914) was an American short story writer, journalist, poet, and Civil War veteran. The exact date of his death is unknown as while rumoured to be travelling with rebel troops, he disappeared, never to be seen again.

His short story, “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” has been described as one of the most famous and frequently anthologized stories in American literature.

Arthur Machen.

Arthur Machen (3 March 1863 – 15 December 1947) was the pen-name of Arthur Llewellyn Jones, a Welsh author and mystic of the 1890s and early 20th century.

His work “The Great God Pan” has been described by Stephen King as “maybe the best [horror story] in the English language”.

Dick Donovan.

James Edward Preston Muddock also known as “Joyce Emmerson Preston Muddock” and “Dick Donovan” (28 May 1843 – 23 January 1934), was a prolific British journalist and author of mystery and horror fiction.

A prolific writer, between 1889 and 1922 he published nearly 300 detective and mystery stories.

E.F. Benson.

Edward Frederic Benson (24 July 1867 – 29 February 1940) was an English novelist and short-story writer.

H. P. Lovecraft spoke well of Benson’s works in his essay “Supernatural Horror in Literature.”

Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell.

Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell (29 September 1810 – 12 November 1865) was an English novelist, biographer, and short story writer.

She became popular for her writing, especially her ghost stories, aided by Charles Dickens, who published her work in his magazine Household Words.

Mary Elizabeth Braddon.

Mary Elizabeth Braddon (4 October 1835 – 4 February 1915) was an English novelist. Though best known for her 1862 novel Lady Audley’s Secret, Braddon wrote several works of supernatural fiction, including the pact with the devil story “Gerald, or the World, the Flesh and the Devil” and the ghost stories “The Cold Embrace”, “Eveline’s Visitant” and “At Chrighton Abbey.”

Robert E. Howard.

Robert Ervin Howard (January 22, 1906 – June 11, 1936) was an American author who wrote in a diverse range of genres. He is well known for his character Conan the Barbarian and is regarded as the father of the sword and sorcery subgenre.

W.W.Jacobs.

William Wymark Jacobs (8 September 1863 – 1 September 1943) was an English author of short stories and novels. He is best known for his farcical comedies involving dockside and rural Essex characters. He occasionally wrote horror stories, however, and today is most famous for “The Monkey’s Paw” (1902).

Walter De La Mare.

Walter John de la Mare (25 April 1873 – 22 June 1956) was an English poet, short story writer and novelist. Though he is probably best remembered for his works for children, he did write a highly acclaimed selection of subtle psychological horror stories, amongst them “Seaton’s Aunt” and “All Hallows”.
